WAAM3D – RoboWAAM PLUS

Manufacturer : WAAM3D
Sectors : Aerospace, Automotive, Defense, Industry

The RoboWAAM Plus is a large-format, fully integrated Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) system. It incorporates Cranfield University’s patented GMAX (Cold Wire GMA) process, delivering deposition rates of up to 15 kg/h, a repeatability of ±0.05 mm and a 2 × 2 × 2 m build envelope. Compatible with iron, aluminium, nickel and copper alloys.

Detailed features of RoboWAAM PLUS

Process: GMAX (Patented Multi-Wire)

The RoboWAAM PLUS integrates the GMAX process developed and patented by WAAM3D and Cranfield University, under development since 2018 with partners in the energy, space, marine and mining industries. A non-energised wire is added to a conventional GMA process, stabilising the arc across a broad range of materials, decoupling material deposition from energy input and enabling microstructure adjustment to achieve target mechanical properties. Process speeds are increased by a factor of 5, making deposition of over 100 kg in a single day a practical reality.

Available Process Variants

In addition to GMAX, the RoboWAAM PLUS supports MIG, MAG and CMT (Cold Metal Transfer) variants. This flexibility allows the process to be matched to the material, geometry and productivity requirements of each application.

Build Envelope and Payload

Build envelope: up to 2 × 2 × 2 m (configuration dependent). Default rotational table: 500 kg. Optional rotational table: 2,100 kg in continuous rotation. Machine footprint: 5,8 × 5,2 × 4,3 m. Repeatability: ±0.05 mm.

System Architecture

Kuka 6-axis robot arm paired with a 2-axis servopositioner. Siemens PLC controller. Fronius power source and Abicor Binzel wire feeders. The system embeds the same monitoring and control features as the RoboWAAM: real-time tracking of process parameters and quality data.

Software: WAAMPlanner and WAAMCtrl

WAAMPlanner handles tool path planning, process parameter allocation and automation of the 8 coordinated axes of motion. WAAMCtrl provides real-time process monitoring, data logging and visualisation. The workflow is identical to that of all other WAAM3D integrated systems.

Applications

The RoboWAAM PLUS is suited to the rapid and consistent production of heavy metal parts. It is applicable to serial production, spare parts manufacturing, and repair of existing assets in industries with demanding scheduling requirements.

Available Options

Fume management system, Advanced Sensor Pack
ShapeTech (real-time layer height measurement and automatic correction).
